GZG Xenomorphs

I did'nt realize that GZG did some rather familiar Xenomorphs with very pronounced jaw lines.... So a pack was bought to go with my space demon Khurasan miniatures. These 'pets' will fill a nice gap between the regular aliens and the Alien Queen; pack masters if you please.

Painting the figures was a challenge in that it was hard to make them appear anything but black. A midnight blue basecoat then had a sepia wash applied. The figures were then drybrushed with a metallic silver.

The figures were then sepia washed again, with a cold grey drybrush applied. Still the figures didn't feel right so the Vallejo black dip was applied. Funnily enough the figures now just look undercoated...oh, well...

Protolenes on the table

Wow! Surprised myself with the painting progress in the last few days. Thought it would be nice to show some of the last batch of figures 'in action'. Hopefully tonight will see them not just drilling, but on active service!

CMG Khanate troopers

Here's a quick summary in pictures of the latest batch of vulpine scavengers to join the sci-fi ranks.

John Connor's latest adversaries

Still on the crest of a enthusiasm, here are two more of the Triples treasures. These are some of GZG latest offerings in the form of 15mm drones. There are several options and varieties including hoverfans. These will be used for my terminator games as early mark proxies for hunter killers.

The models were sprayed chrome, washed with a Vallejo black dip, and dry brushed with natural steel and silver. The edges were highlighted using a flat edge brush. Final touches included some peat brown wash around the top surface and wings, and a picking out of the sensors. More to follow as the enthusiastic tide begins to hit the beach!

Colonial Defence Force - 15mm

Here are the first batch of figures painted from the Sheffield Triples haul. For these troops from GZG I tried a slightly different painting method to the one normally used. First a grey undercoat was applied, then I started with a light grey drybrush all over the figure. Next the details were block covered before applying a brown wash. Final steps were flesh highlights and the odd bit of equipment here and there. Overall I felt it did not work as well as I hoped. It certainly saved time as the figures were painted in an afternoon and a short evening; on the down side the drybrush first rather than after a wash meant that the contrast on the figures aren't so strong. I suppose it's a matter of taste.

The force has been based around 4 manouvre sections. Each section is composed of a leader with a carbine, a SAW gunner and 6 assault rifles.

To maintain firepower there are 2 support sections. In each there is a leader with carbine, 2 troopers with rocket launchers, a SAW gunner, 2 troopers with rifles and a heavy MG team.

For those close in situations there are 2 assault sections composed of an officer and 5 troopers all armed with carbines.

The force is rounded out with 4 sniper teams, a rapid deployment MG platform and a heavy support gun. I purchased a boardgame called Ars Victor which uses mechanics similar to Command Colors, so I am hoping to use these troops for this as well as Tomorrow's War. Hopefully will give a short play through of the game soon...

And so it begins...

A quick post for Daz...hope to see that elephant soon!

A Day at Sheffield Triples

Just another short show report with some piccies. Myself, Daz and Wills took to the road this morning bound for the institute for sport in Sheffield. Always quite an irony for me as wargamers aren't the most renowned health addicts!

I went equipped with a list of items to collect, which in a rare instance I managed to stick to. The delicacies of the bring and buy, particularly the boardgame morsels, did not sway my head. I stuck to the plan and purchased mainly from Ground Zero Games. My collection of 15mm Sci-Fi is already a substantial force, however there are still gaps. The new Colonial Defence Force figures nicely meet some of my needs. They will provide the bread and butter troops of many of the scenarios in my head, whether it be future opponents of terminators, bug hunters, or just good old fashioned militia. When painted I will put a posting up. I feel quite positive about these miniatures as they are already organized, cleaned, based and under coated.

I also bought some Darghur aliens too, with some of Critical Mass Protolene Khanate wolfmen to provide some slave troops. A little more building and making required for these, so they are forming the second tier of enthusiasm at the moment.

In terms of the show I was a little disappointed. If my memory fades me, forgive the next comment, however I felt it was a little on the expensive side to go into the show. The cost of £10 for myself and Will (aged 11) seemed a little steep...maybe the venue has increased it's costs. Also the parking fee of £3.50 just added before you had entered the venue.

There was a good selection of traders as ever. The temptation meter was through the roof, with Spartan games Planetfall and Pendraken 15mm Dwarves just to mention a few. Whilst there was some good quality demonstration games, the overall number and breadth of games to see seemed less than the previous years.

We arrived pretty early and entered as the show had more or less opened, yet there did not seem as many punters as usual, this perception did not change as we left the show at about 1.00pm. There was a benefit as we were able to browse the stalls at ease, without the usual rugby scrum. The growing trend of skirmish gaming seemed prevalent alongside the usual bulk buys to flesh out full size table armies. The concept of small sized forces at premium prices does have a certain allure. Less painting needed, smaller table sizes and quicker games allow for the scatter-minded, blunderbuss approach to dabble in many periods.

The Triples has always been part of my visit calendar, and will continue to be so. Maybe it's my nostalgic rose-colored spectacles, however my fondest memories of the show remain at the University venue, with a Cornish pastie in one hand and a rather bulging other hand clutching onto two foot terrain squares...ah, those were the days!
