The Great War Boardgame - 15mm Allies

These have taken a 'big push' to finish. Illness hit the trenches with some painter sickness, cold - all aggravated by hay fever. But that stiff upper lip attitude has seen these figures leave base camp ready for the front.

I've still got the Kickstarter artillery to do, and I have replaced the HQ tokens with something else (more on that in another post. The figures painted nicely with several steps of paints and washes. Here are some close ups

Thoughts on the figures...in some ways, they are a bit of a compromise to meet the needs of a boardgame. Whilst the sculpts are quite nice, with clear detail, the number of poses feels somewhat limited and a little static. Maybe it's because the average boardgamer is less intense about the quality of the 'playing pieces', therefore the miniatures are of a very high standard when compared to the average in this category.

Well, it feels good to have nearly completed the whole contents of a project/game. In some ways, having other kickstarters I'm involved with being late is not necessarily a problem - painting the approaching Conan and the Hyborean host is on the storm clouded horizon!

Earliest Panzers - A7V tanks, 15mm Plastic Soldier Company

Ready for action now are my A7Vs from the expansion to 'The Great War' boardgame. Painted nicely with some drybrushing and weathering. Not much more to say, here they are...

'Fascine'ation for tanks

Taken Daz's advice and happy with the results. Fascine and bases added. What do you all think, improvement or not?

British tanks trundle into 'The Great War'

At Partizan my main purchase was the expansion to PSC's 'The Great War' command and colours derivative. In the box came 6 'pre-painted' tanks - a single colour and some transfers. This provided an ideal base to get on with some weathering affects.

Ed had given me a fantastic technique to use with the weathering powders; mix them into some white spirit, paint them on (particularly for streaking), and allow the white spirit to evaporate. The fluid mix went on nicely, particularly around the riveting, and left some subtle results once dry.

Whilst we didn't use them in last night's game, myself and Daz tried playing the game for the first time. We enjoyed the experience - enough command and colours feel, whilst also having some period flavour in the use of combat cards and HQ tokens. It certainly felt like a slugfest, co-ordination and a bit of luck needed to do well. I'll do a photo report when my British are painted too. Daz did mention about adding some fascines to the tanks, so might have a go at making some

Cleansing the Unclean

Empress miniatures provide a line of modern horror figures. I wanted some exterminator type characters for my zombie games and low and behold, there are three packs of 'containment' troops. Maybe I've been slightly influenced by the video game 'The Division', but there are some pretty nasty fellows whose role it is to burn out a pandemic in New York City, whether the 'patient' is infected or not. On this basis I decided my paint scheme was to be fairly simple and to the point - red for danger!

I have never liked painting in red, as I struggle to define and brighten the affect. Whilst better than normal, that's still the case with this paint job - even though the base coat spray was Ferrari red! Never mind, I'm sure that no players will misunderstand their intentions, as they will zombies and living alike. Well, you can't be too sure who is infected, can you?

Road Warriors

Going through the survivors continues...with the revamp of these bike freaks from WestWind. I think I've another two somewhere to paint, as well as a traffic cop. I enjoyed these figures a lot, quite a bit of character, particularly the one with no neck! (Don't think this was intentional, more down to my modeling skills. Here they are a little closer...

Next posting will show my finished small purchase from Salute.

More Zombie Characters

Finished some more good / very bad characters for more Zombie game. The bases are rather thick, but they are able to show a changeable value. This will be used to show the 'nerve' of the characters during the game. I don't mind this look too much as I'm used to boardgame depictions and gaming pieces. Here are the other members of the cast:

6mm Sci Fi force for 'Horizon Wars'

Having bought some new scifi rules, I've converted some of my 6mm mountain to be able to play. I've already got plenty of suitable mechs, so it was more the other arms that I needed to concentrate on. I've still got plenty to do, but these little fellas are my start point. They are from the Command Horizon collection that was originally produced by Baccus. Here are a few shots of them on the table...

Re-basing fatigue

Here's the latest set of re-fits. Getting basing fatigue, looking at the queue of kit still to do takes away the initial flush of enthusiasm. Must still persevere! I might do a few other things just to recharge the batteries, we'll see.

Nice kits, the Jagdpanthers - Skytrex models.

Finished the other half of my FOW motorcycles. Nice models compared to some Peter Pig ones I have.

More spare infantry peeled off of my previous vehicle basing. I'm trying to increase the amount of foot bases, saving time and a few pennies.

American artillery. The old Battle Honors crew are a little thin, both in terms of size and detail. I was going to give the guns a bit of a drybrush to bring out some more detail; might do this later.

Some nice anti-air assets, I particularly like the thin barrel on the Ostwind, quite strong too.

My old ASL days has always left a soft spot for the quad HMG maxim mounts - a whooping 24 fire power on the fire table!

Finally some more U.S. anti tank guns, similar story to the other guns in that they need a bit of a drybrush. Well that's all for now folks!
