CMG 15mm grav trucks - painted

Yet more scenic clutter. And guess what... I had similar problems with these vehicles as I did the grav cars. Here's the photo painting log:

Glad these kits are finished, just got the grav bikes, turrets and walkers left to do of the sci-fi purchase Partizan haul. Must admit, the painting flurry is feeling like it's losing momentum. MUST play with some of them to keep the interest going.

CMG grav cars 15mm - painted

In an effort to increase the amount of 'table clutter' for my skirmish gaming I bought some vehicles. Particularly for skirmishing gaming on small boards, vehicles provide that simple, but common, sight for troops to hide behind. Here's the painting log

Let me say from the start, I didn't enjoy painting these miniatures. It's probably my fault, as I didn't wash the vehicles, but the paint did just not take to the resin (particularly the yellow undercoat). When brush painting, the paint went on unevenly, with the biggest error being the application of a nut brown wash. The wash dried very unevenly, making a recovery block coverage needed.

The use of weathering powders did help to soften the wash, and I think the painting of the windows does distract marginally from the vehicle's paintwork. Oh well, they are just for the background...

Impetus - Picts versus Early Germans

Another revering report from our Italian correspondent. Again, not sure of the narrative, yet I'm sure that you can draw your own conclusions...answers on a comments postcard please!

Critical Mass Games - Galacia VTOL 15mm - painted

I've been looking for a suitable troop transport to insert troops onto my 15mm sci-fi battlefield. I've considered the GZG transports (and still am), however not quite enough to get the wallet out. Then I saw the chunky, solid and robust VTOL from Critical Mass Games.

The model is a solid piece of resin with some simple to attach pieces (engines and landing pads). The build/ paint scheme is described in the pictures below:

In some ways the painting was a little disappointing, but I think that's more down to my paint scheme than the miniature. There are lots of flat surfaces which could have accommodated a camo colour scheme...but I chose the quick route. It will still provide a dramatic centre piece for any future action!

A message from our overseas correspondent

I'm sure that we all have long term gaming partners with whom we can share stories of our favourite tabletop victories (or more often defeats!). In the following case this gamer is not just a great opponent, but also a great friend. Phil now lives in sunny Pisa in Italy, but many years ago we gamed together during his 'student' years. What started as an exploration into the first edition into DBA lead to show tables at Partizan, games campaigns and lots of fun gaming (Phil, can you remember your imaginative use of a Cantabrian light horse circle?). We both share the passion for the hobby of bringing history to life, in the form of story telling. Even though Phil has lived in Pisa for several years, he still continues to carry the gaming torch with a small group of gamers living there.

One of Phil's enduring interests has been, and still is, the Dark Ages. He has progressed through several rule sets with a current favourite being Impetus. Phil has kindly forwarded several of his gaming adventures in picture format; the pictures here are of a Viking and Norman clash of arms. In the true tradition of story telling, if anybody wants to hazard a guess at what happened in this game...answers on a comments postcard please! Phil, if you are reading, you can adjudicate who came closest to the correct outcome...

Hammers Slammers jeeps 15mm - painted

First batch of Partizan purchases finished. These jeeps from Ainsty castings are fairly simple in design, but can be imagined moving at high speeds. I like the circular, UFO shaped design and small nature of the models. A real bargain at £5 for 4 jeeps.

I will be using these vehicles initially as 'cavalry' unit types for Ars Victor. Their lightweight but rapid design matches the unit type as they are fast moving, but not particularly hard hitting. I also bought an Ainsty combat car. I'm not sure on it's use yet, but am sure I will come up with something. The paintjob makes it look like a well used piece of equipment, perfect for my Colonial Defence Force troopers.

The painting was fairly basic with several washes and drybrushed, I used some weathering powders on the miniatures to age them somewhat. The pictures below are a snapshot diary of the painting scheme.

Ion Age Betrayers 15mm - painted

These are the remnants of an old EBay purchase of some of the old Firefight miniatures, now being sold by Ion Age miniatures. They were lounging around, uncared for and without purpose, until the recent Ars Victor find. These figures will ideally fill the 'scavenger' unit type from the game.

Here are a few pictures showing how the figures were painted. I'm starting to feel at the moment that pictures say more than words. However, if you want further details of the colours used etc. just drop me a comment...

I wanted these figures to be dirty looking, so I kept to a brown palette where possible. I used some off white just to lift out some contesting detail.

Next painting postings should include some of the Partizan haul.
